New Book Examines Redemptive Patriotism as Antidote to Toxic Polarization
A More Perfect Union Provides Hope for Path Forward
Washington, D.C. - Right-Wing rallies at the nation’s Capital this weekend, lawsuits over life-saving mask efforts, and voting rights suppression efforts continue to dominate the daily headlines. Where do these deep divisions come from and what do we do about it? In his newly released book, A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community, Sojourners President Adam Taylor tackles the deep roots of the toxic polarization that paralyzes our politics, communities, and even our churches.
Taylor digs into our nation’s history; cites current studies on attitudes and beliefs; and draws on his own experience as a bi-racial Black man in America as he makes the case for Redemptive Patriotism as the antidote to toxic polarization. An interview with Adam could provide great context for why there are such deep divisions in our country today, and more importantly what we can do about them.
This compelling chronicle also addresses many current issues, from immigration, poverty, and criminal justice to combatting climate change and revitalizing our democracy, by offering tangible and practical policy prescriptions to transform our broken political system and heal our nation. Busboys and Poets will host a book discussion with Taylor and others to discuss the themes of the book, including building the Beloved Community, the moral center of the Civil Rights Movement.

A graduate of Emory University, the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, Taylor is also ordained in the American Baptist Church.
