Sojourners Applauds Passage of Gun Safety Bill
Urges President Biden to sign into law
WASHINGTON, DC - In response to today’s passage of The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Rev. Adam Russell Taylor, President of Sojourners, released the following statement:
“After over 20 years of Congressional inaction, this bipartisan bill takes some long overdue steps to increase gun safety. While we celebrate this necessary but insufficient progress towards increasing public safety, we are concerned that the current language may stigmatize mental and behavioral health and increase racial injustice in schools. Sojourners is committed to upholding the civil and human rights of all people, who are made in the image and the likeness of God. We urge elected officials continue to see and act on the urgency to address the scourge of gun violence as we work toward protecting our communities and advancing the common good as we address these concerns during the implementation of this bill once signed into law.”
