WASHINGTON, DC—Yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that gay, lesbian, and transgender workers are protected by federal law forbidding discrimination on the basis of sex. In the 6-3 ruling, Justice Neil Gorsuch, on behalf of the majority, writes: "An employer who fired an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex... Those who adopted the Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result. But the limits of the drafters' imagination supply no reason to ignore the law's demands."
In response, Sojourners issued the following statement:
"Sojourners commends the SCOTUS decision to protect gay, lesbian, and transgender employees from workplace discrimination. This decision allows us to more closely resemble the kingdom of God and its endless love for all. To be a person of faith is to be steadfastly committed to social justice and equal protection for workers, regardless of faith, gender, sexuality, or race. Our faith tradition convicts in us a commitment to justice for every person, each of whom is made in the image of God.”
