Voice of the Day: Anne Lamott
"Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: You don't give up." - Anne Lamott from Bird by Bird: Some instructions on writing and life
Prayer of the Day: Patience
God, give me patience this month. Help me to resist negativity. Give me grace and mercy so that I may extend your love to others. Amen.
Verse of the Day: Peace, Faithfulness, and Righteousness
"Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky." - Psalm 85:10-11
Voice of the Day: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
"If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each [one's] life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Prayer of the Day: Contentment
Voice of the Day: Sylvia Boorstein
"My father . . . used to say, 'I need my anger. It obliges me to take action.' I think my father was partly right. Anger arises, naturally, to signal disturbing situations that might require action. But actions initiated in anger perpetuate suffering. The most effective actions are those conceived in the wisdom of clarity." - Sylvia Boorstein
Prayer of the Day: Egypt
Almighty God, we ask for your peace to rest upon Egypt during their elections. May the spirit of freedom overcome any hate or violence that may still be present. Amen.
Verse of the Day: Waiting for God's Salvation
"Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of [God’s] people [God] will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for [God], so that [God] might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in [God's] salvation." - Isaiah 25:8-9
Alaskan Students Join Hallelujah Chorus
In a fashion harkening back to Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” our second installment of Hallelujah chorus videos focuses on a cute and lively group of 5th graders from Quinhagak, Alaska, who take sign-making in music videos to a new level – one where childish enthusiasm and winter scenery combine to make one special Christmas treat.
Verse of the Day: Be Reconciled to One Another
"So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift." - Matthew 5:23-24
Voice of the Day: Jiddu Krishnamurti
"You must understand the whole of life, not just one little part of it. That is why you must read, that is why you must look at the skies, that is why you must sing, and dance, and write poems, and suffer, and understand, for all that is life." - Jiddu Krishnamurti
Prayer of the Day: Domestic violence
God of healing, we pray for all the victims of domestic violence. Lead them to a safe place where they can be healed and nurtured. For the perpetrators, mend their hearts and minds, and show them what true love looks like. Amen.
Hallelujah Chorus from a Mall Court Flash Mob
Today we launch a new daily feature for the Christmas season: Video interpretations of "The Hallelujah Chorus" from Georg Friedrich Händel's Messiah.
Our first installment comes from Canada where on Nov. 13, 2010, shoppers at the Welland Seaway Mall in Welland, Ontario got a big surprise when a flash mob — led by members of the Chorus Niagara — broke into a (seemingly spontaneous) rendition of "The Hallelujah Chorus."
Verse of the Day: A Sliver of Faith
"Because you have so little faith. I tell you this: if you had even a faint spark of faith, even faith as tiny as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and because of your faith, the mountain would move. If you had just a sliver of faith, you would find nothing impossible." - Matthew 17:20
Prayer of the Day: Syria
Lord, we continue to pray for the conflict in Syria. Bless all who are working hard for peace, and give them strength. Amen.
Voice of the Day: D.H. Lawrence
"My belief is in the blood and flesh as being wiser than the intellect. The body-conscious is where life bubbles up in us. It is how we know we are alive, alive to the depths of our souls, and in touch somewhere with the vivid reaches of the cosmos." - D.H. Lawrence
Verse of the Day: Unity of Spirit
Be humble. Be gentle. Be patient. Tolerate one another in an atmosphere thick with love. Make every effort to preserve the unity the Spirit has already created, with peace binding you together. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were all called to pursue one hope. - Ephesians 4:2-4 (The Voice)
Voice of the Day: Elise Boulding
"Frugality is one of the most beautiful and joyful words in the English language, and yet one that we are culturally cut off from understanding and enjoying. The consumption society has made us feel that happiness lies in having things, and has failed to teach us the happiness of not having things." - Elise Boulding
Prayer of the Day: Thanksgiving (6 of 6)
God, thank you for love that is patient, kind, and unfailing. Thank you that nothing can separate us from your love that is in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Voice of the Day: Dorothy L. Sayers
"Unless we do change our whole way of thought about work, I do not think we shall ever escape from the appalling squirrel-cage of economic confusion in which we have been madly turning for the last three centuries or so, the cage in which we landed ourselves by acquiescing in a social system based upon envy and avarice." - Dorothy L. Sayers
