About The Event
Sojourners is partnering with the Franciscan Action Network and Faith in Peace Concerts to organize the fourth annual "Faith in Democracy" interfaith vigil on the Washington, DC Mall at 7th Street (between Madison and Jefferson Aves) on January 5th, 2024 from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm. We are holding this vigil on the eve of the anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
This year's fourth annual "Faith in Democracy" interfaith vigil will feature faith leaders speaking up for a strong, functioning, representative, democracy as a way to solve problems without violence. We plan on creating an event similar to the ones of the past, focusing on nonpartisan messages from different faith traditions and inspirational music/spiritual singing. We'll share messages of faith that unify Americans and emphasize our strong commitment to, and concerns about, our democracy and our freedoms at this juncture. We've invited leaders to congregate on the National Mall to share why their faith perspective encourages them to support democracy, peace and justice. As a nonpartisan event, we have invited a balanced set of speakers representing Republicans and Democrats.
The acclaimed Washington Douglass Chorale will headline the music. Besides providing inspirational music, the vision of the Washington Douglass Chorale will help us send a message of our commitment to the meaning of patriotism and the principles and ideals upon which our nation was founded: liberty and justice for all.
Confirmed speakers thus far include: Adam Taylor from Sojourners, Sr Carol Zinn with Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Imam Taleb Shareef, President and Imam of historic Masjid Muhammad, Rev. Leslie Copeland Tune with the National Council of Churches, with other prominent leaders of faith. In addition, members of Congress or former Members of Congress from both parties have been invited to participate.
We are planning to livestream this event, as we have in past years, so that individuals and groups from around the country can participate. To register for either in-person or livestreaming, go to: Register Now!.
