Since 2004, a diverse group of religious leaders, reproductive rights advocates, and medical professionals have met to talk about sex. Leaders from 18 organizations—including the National Minority AIDS Council, the National Organization for Women, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops—released an interim report in May titled “The National Consensus Process on Sexual Health and Responsible Sexual Behavior.” Several organizations withdrew from the dialogue, including Focus on the Family and the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network.
In the report, participants shared the desire for people in the U.S. to respect each other’s sexuality, practice responsible sexual behavior, and increase community involvement in promoting sexual well-being. They differed on the context in which healthy sexual expression can take place.
