A Growing Tide Against the SOA

More than 2,300 people marched onto the grounds of the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) at Ft. Benning, Georgia, on November 22, demanding that the "school of assassins" be closed. Since 1990, 38 people have spent a total of 27 years in prison for actions at the base, but this year's participants were released without charge.

The event "should send a message to those who voted to fund the SOA that they are bucking a growing tide in this country demanding the closure of the School of the Americas," said Carol Richardson, co-director of SOA Watch, an organization dedicated to closing the SOA.
