THE QUESTION "Is Islam the Enemy?" (by Charles Kimball, No- vember-December 1998) is so clearly repudiated in your current issue. We need to recognize the complexities while seeking reconciliation by sharing our differences.
One of my favorite scriptural quotations comes from the Quran and is quoted in The Autobiography of Malcolm X: "If you take one step toward Allah, Allah will take two steps toward you." That is the really scary part of it all. As Charles Kimball reminds us, the Living Spiritual Reality of All does not depend on any mere human name of Yahweh, Allah, Jehovah, or God. Of course, all down through the ages many who catch the faintest glimpse of the Reality turn away from this vital step and toward greedy exploitation of cult mysticism. In our pilgrimage of would-be followers of Jesus, we are called to convert by our example of respect for all the children of God.
