Paulist priest and movie producer Ellwood "Bud" Kieser, known as the Father of Hollywood, died September 16. He was 71. His work included the movie Romero, on the life and death of the Salvadoran archbishop; Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story; and Insight, a daytime serial-with-a-moral that ran for 23 years and won six Emmys.
Kieser founded Paulist Productions, a film company that uses film and TV to "illumine, challenge, and motivate," and the Humanitas Prize, given to film and TV programs that exemplify human values. During his more than 35 years in Hollywood, he challenged the movie industry, in his words, to "diminish the level of violence in movies and TV. And start portraying the truth—the truth that violence doesn't work in real life or, often, on the screen either."
