  • A Baltimore County judge exceeded sentencing guidelines and gave Philip Berrigan, left, 30 months in prison for damaging an A-10 Warthog aircraft, such as those used to fire depleted uranium ammunition in Iraq and Kosovo. The court also denied the 76-year-old Berrigan - and three other participating activists who also received unusually harsh sentences - the opportunity to present expert testimony in their defense on the effects of DU and their rights and responsibilities under international law.
  • Thirty-five religious, labor, and community leaders were arrested in Los Angeles in April for doing nonviolent civil disobedience in solidarity with striking janitors there. The predominantly Latino strikers were demanding a living wage, and despite violence from police and replacement workers were successful in winning significant improvements and forming new relationships with several of Los Angeles' top building owners (see www.justiceforjanitors.org).
