Clergy, labor, and civil rights groups protested with employees outside a Miami nursing home after the management filed objections with the National Labor Relations Board alleging that union organizers used "voodoo practices" to intimidate the largely Haitian workforce into voting for the union. Organizer Marie Jean-Phillipe was portrayed as a "priestess" who often held "voodoo beads." In fact, Jean-Phillipe, a Haitian American, is a devout Catholic who carries a rosary. Workers at the nursing home voted 49 to 37 to unionize, citing low wages, unaffordable health insurance, and mistreatment from management.
