Character Counts. (Who Knew?)

Arguing that "character counts," the United Church of Christ is pressuring all 50 state public utility commissioners to investigate WorldCom and revoke its local licenses if they find it has violated the public interest. Robert Chase, director of communications for the UCC, addressed the commissioners at a February meeting in Washington, D.C., saying, "In the face of the largest corporate misconduct in American history, the UCC is urging you to adopt rules of stewardship for information-age companies that use the public airways under public-interest authorizations, and manage the nation's digital infrastructure."

Chase told the commissioners, "We believe that as public servants each of you has a responsibility to protect consumers by taking action when a company such as WorldCom violates the law on such a massive scale." According to the UCC, WorldCom violated the public trust when it defrauded investors by overstating its earnings by almost $10 billion.
