I WAS READING my stack of fall Sojourners out of chronological order this week. A January "Postmark" letter on Ed Spivey Jr.'s November "H'rumphs" (featuring Shecky Boaz) caused me to turn there next. I found the writing to be "superficial" indeed! -- just what Sojourners needs at least once in every issue to put into perspective the very real and serious global issues we all live with.
I'm not a psychologist of humor, but I do know that I frequently need to laugh at myself, my life, my church, my city, and the scenes I work in every day as a hospital chaplain working with patients and their families. And Ed Spivey's columns help me a lot to get some perspective on things that otherwise only make me sad or angry. Being able to smile at our real peccadilloes and peculiarities is not anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, or anti-feminist. It is pro-humanity. Thanks for all you do to lighten our lives in all senses of the word.
