Northern cardinal chips away
at the blue light,
singing for his mate.
Sleepy-eyed houses
nod and drop their shades
into the dreams
of Golden Rain trees
in full blossom;
mimosa-fingered leaves
cupping a thousand possibilities.
Cicadas pound their string wings
like angry violinists, rosin-less.
Breezes open and close
in the alley,
fold and unfold,
like the delicate
azure flower at
the center of God’s eye.
