Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland and Adolfo Perez Esquivel of Argentina traveled to Iraq in March on a Fellowship of Reconciliation delegation. Led by FOR executive director John Dear, S.J., the group urged the United States and the United Nations Security Council to lift the economic sanctions against Iraq.
The delegation delivered "Covenants of Peace" documents signed by nearly 1,000 North American religious and secular communities, and they apologized for the way the United States has treated Iraqis. "If this humanitarian disaster were occurring anywhere else in the world besides Iraq, and the perpetrator were anyone but the United States and the United Nations," Dear said, "this would be considered a genocide."
