Whose Sovereignty?

Your article on Zionism and Christian views ("How Christian is Zionism?" by Leslie Allen and Glen Stassen, July-August 2003) contains a gross misrepresentation when it declares that "Most Zionists claim that God's eternal covenant with Abraham and his descendants means that Israel must have undivided political sovereignty over all the land mentioned there, which stretches from the Nile in Egypt to the Euphrates in what is now Iraq." Most Zionists are secular and do not literally believe that God made such a promise. Second, few if any Zionists espouse the view that Israel ought to be sovereign over this vast area. To assert that "most Zionists claim" is a gross misrepresentation and a disservice to your readers.
